Tudor Heights’ Aviary Provides Therapy for Memory Care Residents
Those who have pet companions know how happy they can make us feel. Scientific research further indicates that pets, including birds, can have a beneficial impact on our health and well-being. At Tudor Heights, we’ve built an aviary for all residents to enjoy as part of our focus on the 4 components of wellness: physical, social, intellectual and spiritual.
Our birds have positive effects on residents with cognitive memory concerns. The BrightFocus Foundation, a national non-profit that supports research to end Alzheimer’s, reports that the very presence of a pet can help reduce the effects of dementia—anxiety, agitation, irritability, depression, and loneliness. By their friendliness and non-threatening way, pets can help a dementia patient be more interactive when sometimes they are not able to do so in social settings with other adults.
Animals in general have many advantages for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, including:
- Reduced anxiety
- Lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol
- Increased levels of the hormone serotonin that makes us feel good
- Lessening of a feeling of loneliness
- Lower blood pressure and heart rate
- Improved social skills
- Increased mental stimulation
The aviary in our memory care community is a source of amazement for individual enjoyment, as well as a meeting place for residents to socialize. Residents and visitors love to find a comfortable spot near the aviary to spend time watching the birds and discussing their colors and activities. The birds have even sparked new interests in bird species, habits and activities and have motivated viewers to learn about our feathered friends at Tudor Heights.
We encourage you to stop and visit our aviary the next time you are in the Pikesville and northern Baltimore area. The sights and sounds will soothe and inspire while bringing a touch of nature indoors for your enjoyment.
